Hanukkah officially started at sundown tonight, marked by the lighting of the National Menorah on the White House Ellipse. Hanukkah celebrates the retaking of the Temple after it was desecrated by Grecian/Syrian armies, who set up an altar to Zeus and sacrificed a pig. Judah Maccabee and his army of spiritual revolutionaries broke through and reconsecrated the Temple to the Lord. To denote this consecration, they relit the flame on the menorah, and it miraculously burned for 8 days straight!
