Jonas in DC—A Prophetic Message?

Winter Storm Jonas made history this weekend in Washington DC and New York City. It’s interesting that Jonas was named after the biblical prophet Jonah, author of the “Book of Jonah,” who confronted the capital of Babylon and provoked genuine repentance.

Like the pages of a book, this “snow hurricane” called Jonah was sandwiched between a dramatic front cover and back cover, conveying the contents within. Friday was the front cover of this book. Saturday brought the substance. Sunday, today, serves as the back cover.

And the pages within actually forms a prophecy to the capitals of our government and our economy.

1-22: Anniversary Roe v Wade
Friday, January 22 marked the 43rd anniversary of Roe v Wade and the annual DC March for Life rally. Tens of thousands braved the beginning of the blizzard to take their stand before God and government. Matt Lockett and the JHOP-DC team took their post in front of the Supreme Court, as they have done for a decade, silent witnesses to the cries of the unborn.

And Jonas prophesied.

1-24: Anniversary of Auschwitz Liberation
Today, January 24, marks the 71st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. So interesting the final gusts of Jonas finally blew out to sea early today, leaving record snowfalls and flooding as an enduring witness of the prophet’s warning.

The message of Jonas is conveyed by the front cover, the back cover, and the substance left behind. Look into abortion clinics, and the alleged merchandising of baby parts by Planned Parenthood. Gaze into the gas chambers of Auschwitz, where 7 million Jews perished. Take to heart the unimaginable horror of the forced martyrdom of the innocent. See how the satanic forces of dehumanization are still at work in our time.

Please be open as well to perceive the hope conveyed. A day of deliverance from the covenant with death that preserved for its worshipers the thrones of global power. A day when the machine of death was forced to a sudden halt. And the magnitude of evil that was hidden became fully exposed.

White as Snow—Invitation to Repentance
Now you can begin to understand Jonas’ call over the past three days. As with Ninevah, capital of Babylon, the Lord has thundered a message in the substance of the snow.

We and our leaders are deserving of God’s judgement. Yet even now, it’s not too late to repent of the forced injustice, bloodshed, betrayal and covenant-breaking, idolatry, greed, debt, deceit, unconscionable alliances and numbness of conscience promoted from within the capitals of our nation.

A window has opened. A limited window of opportunity for a genuine turnaround. Every inch of snow covering the ground testifies of a day of justice, and the generous verdict being offered by Heaven’s court.

“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool” (Isaiah 18:1).

Jonah’s invitation has been given. I hope we can authentically respond. Because we really don’t want to know the alternative. I guarantee you these sins are not without repercussions, meaning that they will no longer remain buried.

But because of Jesus and His precious blood, they are already atoned for. Though your sins be as scarlet, red as crimson, He is willing to forgive and cleanse you. To wash you white as snow.

Jonah’s Call, Ninevah’s Response
“Arise, go to Ninevah the great city and proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you” (Jonah 3:3).

Jonah’s message was that the city of Ninevah would be overthrown in 40 days. I felt something on this while writing, and so I checked what date it would be 40 days from now. And it’s 3-3, or March 3.

Is God giving a 40 day window of repentance until 3-3, inspired by the proclamation commanded in Jonah 3:3? I don’t want to put a “thus says the Lord” on it. But significant leaders including Dutch Sheets and others have already been prophesying that dramatic shifts are coming, beginning in March and April.

And there’s a reason we’re called to “light the gates” during this season. There’s a reason we’re being summoned by the Lord to pray in the city throughout this time, culminating with a corporate gathering on 2-22.

As Jonah with Ninevah, the Lord has been giving both a warning and an invitation to the capitals of our nation. The ancient capital of Babylon responded with prayer, fasting and genuine repentance—led by none other than Ninevah’s king. He laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sought the Lord in earnest.

And Ninevah was preserved. May our leaders, the kings and king-makers in government and finance, take heed of this vital pattern. You know the challenges we are truly facing—in government and finance, in DC, NYC and our nation.“Who knows, God may turn and relent, and withdraw His burning anger so that we shall not perish?”

Please seek the Lord wholeheartedly for a similar verdict today, in Jesus’ Name.
