Avenger of the Blood. What a name for a prayer strategy!
Martha Lucia wrote on this revelatory strategy in 2001. Really in that year we saw two spiritual movements emerging, both with the strategy on avenging the blood. On 9-11, the towers fell and Islamist terrorism became real to most Americans for the very first time. The cry of these terrorists, a core dedication behind every strike, was to avenge blood–in a never-ending battle of brother against brother. Each time Cain slays Abel, the cry of blood from the ground is only magnified.
It was at this very time in American history that the Lord began to bring a deeper revelation on the power of Christ’s blood to silence the unjust bloodshed on the ground. By silence I don’t mean marginalizing, or refusing a demand to speak. Instead, applying Christ’s precious blood is the only thing that can satisfy the righteous cries for justice and bring sustained peace and absolution. Only then can the spiritual realm encompassing both the soil and affected humans come to true shalom.
As Martha Lucia puts it, “God said the innocent blood pollutes or brings corruption to the land. The only way that defilement can be avenged is through the blood. Blood redeems blood.”
We were honored that Martha could join us for Tuesday’s call, and we are honored to post this HISTORIC REVELATION she penned in 2001. It’s vitally important to understand as we advance in this New Birth of Freedom project. Please note this is an article, not a quick posting–you might consider printing it for review.
AVENGER OF THE BLOOD–MARTHA LUCIA
There is a cry arising in the earth; it is the cry of the innocent blood that has been uncovered.
“For behold the Lord cometh out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: The earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain” (Isa. 26:21).
As followers of Jesus Christ, we have been given the privilege of answering this cry. When we avenge the blood of Jesus on our adversary it will silence the cry of the blood from the land. In the Old Testament, which is a foreshadowing of the new covenant, God gave the Israelites some very specific instructions related to the blood in the Law.
Not only did God direct the priest to make blood sacrifices, but He also set up laws to deal with those who shed the blood of another. He described certain cities as “bloody” and described the woes they were destined to receive if they did not have a change of heart and repent.
In this article we will try to give an understanding of these subjects. Then we will explore our opportunity to become the blood avenger and redeem the blood through the accomplished plan of redemption established by the Father before the foundations of the world–when Jesus died, arose and ascended to the Father. According to 1 Peter 1:18-20 the blood of Jesus paid the price to redeem everything. We will concentrate on this one area in this writing, the Blood!
Avenging and Redeeming the Blood
The avenger of blood is defined in Deuteronomy 19 as the one who could avenge the blood of his next of kin when they had been slain. To avenge means to take vengeance on behalf of another or to exact satisfaction for a wrong by punishing the wrong doer. The Hebrew word for avenger is ga’al, which means to redeem according to the law of kinship. God was not only giving the next of kin the right to bring punishment in retaliation for the innocent blood that had been shed, but He was also giving him the right to redeem the blood. As the next of kin of Jesus, we have full authority to avenge His blood upon the head of the enemy and bring redemption through the shed blood of Jesus (Ro. 8:17).
You might be asking, “Who was the murderer of Jesus?” 1 Corinthians 2:8 says, “which none of the princes of this world knew; for had they known it they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory.” If the prince—ruled by Satan had known what would be accomplished on the cross he would not have crucified the Lord of
Glory. Satan and his demons are responsible for the shedding of Christ’s innocent blood, but what a surprise they were in for! They had no idea of the power contained in that sacrifice. Now the sons of God have every right to avenge the blood of Jesus on every principality, power, ruler of the darkness, and wicked spirit in high places. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. He came to give us abundant life, but bring destruction to the devil.
God was very clear in His direction to Moses that it would be beneficial to the people of Israel for the blood of the innocent to be purged from their land. God had given them the land as an inheritance. The shedding of innocent blood would defile the land, tarnish their inheritance, and ultimately the blood guiltiness of the land would come upon them. Isaiah prophesied over the nation of Israel:
“Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.” (Is. 59:1-3)
Jesus: The Blood Avenger
The blood guiltiness of the land had encompassed the hearts of the people and separated them from God. It had drawn them into iniquitous sins. There was evil and perversion in the land and in the people, yet no one was calling out for redemption or executing judgment. This displeased God.
“And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him. For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak. According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompense to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompense.” (Is. 59:16-18)
This is a picture of who Jesus had to become and of the garments He was required to wear in order to fulfill this Scripture. By becoming the intercessor for us and putting on righteousness, salvation, vengeance and zeal, Jesus became the Blood Avenger to redeem the blood. We, as children of God, have be given the right to wear that same clothing. The enemy will continue to rule until God finds a people who will join Him in His redemptive purposes. In Isaiah 59:21 God made a covenant with His redeemed:
“My Spirit is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of the seed’s seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever.”
The same spirit and words of judgment God put in Jesus’ mouth have been put in the mouths of the redeemed.
“To execute vengeance upon the heathen and punishments upon the people; To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; To execute upon them the judgment written: this HONOR have ALL his saints. Praise ye the Lord.” (Ps. 149:7-9)
“With my soul I have desired You in the night, Yes, by my spirit within me I will seek You early; For when Your judgments are in the earth, The inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.” (Is. 26:9 NKJV)
It will take executing the vengeance of God for the world to learn righteousness and as the saints of God we have the honor to execute these judgments and bring the plan of redemption to bear on all God’s creation.
Vengeance: Answering the Cry of the Blood
Isaiah prophesied about the day of vengeance in Isaiah 61:1-2:
“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn.” Jesus echoed these words in Luke 4:18-19, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”
It is interesting to note that when Jesus read this scripture, He did not include the next segment, “and the day of God’s vengeance.” I believe Jesus did not make this proclamation because it was not time for it yet. He had not yet become the propitiation for our sins (1 Jn. 2:2). But the day of vengeance was in His heart as Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 63:3-4:
“I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.”
The blood of Jesus answered the cry of the blood as He became obedient to the cross. His Church is the executor of His victory we must carry it out. The cry of Jesus that has echoed down through history strikes fear in the heart of demons—It is Finished!
Vengeance and redemption have always been in God’s heart. Redemption comes through executing His vengeance. Verse 8 of Isaiah 63 says, “For it is the day of the Lord’s vengeance (revenge), and the year of recompenses (reward) for the controversy (contest) of Zion.” Wow! It is time to be rewarded for the contest we have been in since the fall of man. Hallelujah!
The Peace Offering
The voice of the blood is rising from the ground. I believe God is telling us that now is the time to take our stand as the blood avenger. The cry of the blood will be answered either by the atoning blood of Jesus being applied or by the bloodthirsty demons that require continual sacrifices of blood through war, abortion, witchcraft, the occult, etc.
The blood has always been precious to God. It provided the sign on the doorpost that freed the Israelites from bondage (Ex. 12:13, 23). The blood represented God’s covenant with His people (Ex. 24:8). The blood was offered as a sin offering (Ex. 30:10; Lev. 4:25,30,34; 5:9; 7:2; 14:14; Ez. 45:19). Blood was also used to purify and sanctify the altar and to make reconciliation (Lev. 8:15). The blood was used to sanctify the priests (Ex. 29:20- 21, Lev. 8:23) and to make atonement for the soul (Lev. 17:11).
Blood was offered as a peace offering (Lev. 7:14, 2 Kg. 16:13) and as an offering for the kingdom and the sanctuary (2 Ch. 29:21,22). The priests applied the blood to the horns of the altar of sweet incense, which represents prayers (Lev. 4:7). The life of the flesh is in the blood (Lev. 17:11). God heard the cry of the blood when it was offered as a sacrifice unto Him or when it was shed for unjust reasons. Jesus’ blood redeemed it all. The blood of Jesus redeemed even the shed blood!
Our Role: Reconciling the Land
In Genesis 4 we find the account of Cain and Abel where God said to Abel, “the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.” The innocent blood of Abel was crying out for God to avenge him of his adversary. God responded to that cry by pronouncing a curse on Cain, “When thou tillest the ground it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength (produce, fruit, substance, wealth).”
The defilement of blood brought a curse of desolation on the land. The demonic forces would love to see that curse remain in the land. But the curse God pronounced on Cain affected more than just the land. God decided to place a mark on Cain to prevent further bloodshed and drove him from His presence.
At that time the law allowing the avenger of blood had not yet been established. Today, we can see where the demonic forces of death, hell, and war have ruled in areas of the world where war after war has resulted in the death of many innocent people and this blood guiltiness has left the land desolate. When bloodthirsty demons answer the cry of the blood, the spirit of death, hell, and desolation remain. Revelation 6:8 describes hell and death as spirits:
“And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.”
The spirit of hell, which causes war when it rules over the land and people, comes with death to torture, maim, and rape. Their ultimate desire is to bring death, fear, and torment to people—the saying war is Hell is true. Because of Jesus’ victory on the cross, these spirits have been defeated and MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE TO RULE. We are to rule in the midst of our enemies (Ps. 110:2).
Jesus said: “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of death and hell.” (Rev. 1:17b-18)
“And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Mt. 16:19)
Jesus holds the keys that will shut up the voices of these demon spirits forever. As next of kin, we have been given the right to use these keys and take vengeance on all demonic powers, principalities, rulers of the darkness, and wicked spirits in high places. As we become the blood avenger and redeem the blood, we will see the Word of God proven: the gates of hell shall not prevail against the Church.
Supreme Court Grounds–Defilement and Abortion
The Lord spoke to Moses in Numbers 35:33-34 concerning the effect of the blood on the land: “So you shall not pollute the land where you are; for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it. Therefore do not defile the land which you inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell; for I the LORD dwell among the children of Israel.”
Again God said the innocent blood pollutes or brings corruption to the land. The only way that defilement can be avenged is through the blood. Blood redeems blood.
A sad example of how the blood pollutes the land and what happens when the bloodthirsty demons answer the cry of the blood can be found at the site on which the Supreme Court of the United States is built. During the Civil War the site served as a federal military prison. In addition, in the yard behind the prison, the commander of the notorious Andersonville Prison was hung for crimes he committed during the Civil War. Over 13,000 Confederate soldiers died at Andersonville, near Sumter, GA, in a 14-month period while this commander was in charge. In 1921 the land was purchased by the National Woman’s Party to be their permanent headquarters in the crusade for equal rights for women.
In 1929 the site was acquired for the Supreme Court Building. When the case of Roe vs. Wade was presented to the Supreme Court, the issue was related to women’s rights: could they shed innocent blood through abortion?
Abortion Today
The bloodthirsty iniquitous demons entrenched in the land were still affecting what occurred on that land. They demanded their legal right to shed blood and have prolonged the curse that fell on the land during the days of the Civil War and have brought more bloodshed through abortion. In a recent study by the Family Research Council it was reported that the number of deaths from legalized abortion in the United States is now a staggering 42 million! (note: as of 2012, approx. 50 million).
The blood of these 42 million is crying out from the ground for justice. The Power of the Blood speaking about Satan, Jesus said, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (Jn. 10:10 NKJV)
Isaiah 53 provides a glimpse of what Jesus took on Himself and allowed Satan and his demons to put on Him. Jesus was despised and rejected. He took on our sorrows, grief, sickness, pain afflictions, transgressions (both national, moral, and religious rebellion), iniquities (effects of sin), and sins. He suffered beatings so we might have wholeness and health. He was taken away by oppression and judgment and His grave was assigned with wicked men. These are some of the things that Jesus bore for us so we might be more than conquerors (Ro. 8:37). Since Jesus has already paid the price at Calvary and won that victory for us, we can execute the ve God against the demons that would try to put these things on us or steal from us.
The right to execute the victory of the cross by avenging the blood of Jesus belongs to us, His next of kin.
We Must Not Avenge the Flesh
In 1 Samuel 25 we find the story of David and Nabal. Nabal was a wealthy herdsman of goats and sheep, who was known for his harsh and evil dealings. During sheep shearing season, which was considered a festive occasion, David sent some of his men to request food in exchange for the protection David and his men had provided Nabal’s shepherds. Nabal rejected the request and sent the men away without any kind of payment. David responded with a thirst for Nabal’s blood.
In anger, David girded a sword at his side, gathered 600 men, and marched off to destroy Nabal. God intervened, however, by letting Nabal’s wife, Abigail, know that David and his men were approaching. She appeased David’s anger with her humility, offerings, and wisely chosen words.
David heeded the warning and much bloodshed was prevented. If David had not heeded Abigail’s plea, he would have been avenging his flesh and NOT innocent blood. David realized this when he spoke to Abigail in 1 Samuel 25:32-33 (NKJV):
“Blessed is the LORD God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! And blessed is your advice and blessed are you, because you have kept me this day from coming to bloodshed and from avenging myself with my own hand.”
About ten days later the Lord struck Nabal and he died. When David heard about Nabal’s death, he said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and has kept His servant from evil! For the LORD has returned the wickedness of Nabal on his own head.” (I Sa. 25:39 NKJV)
We must not avenge the flesh, only the innocent blood. Our war is not against flesh and blood, but against Satan and the demonic forces he rules. The story of Joab is very interesting and tells us something of the blood of war. Joab, who was general of David’s army, was guilty of shedding innocent blood when he killed men that David had made a peace treaty with (2 Samuel 3:21-34). Joab was to answer to David, but he took things into his own hands and killed Amasa and Abner. Joab was told what David had done, yet Joab killed Abner anyway. When David heard this he said, “I and my kingdom are guiltless before the Lord for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner: Let it rest on the head of Joab.” 1 Kings 2:5 recounts the facts that Joab killed Abner and Amasa, “and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet.”
Joab assigned the blood to his girdle, which represented his armor, as though this feat had been done as a result of war. However, the bloodshed was done during the time when the king had declared peace between him and these men. The result was that David gave instructions to kill Joab in order for the blood guiltiness to be removed. So Joab was killed and peace pronounced upon the kingdom of David. There is a time when God says that war is of Him, but we must know that time. (1 Ch. 5:22 and Ecc. 3:1,8).
Woe to Jerusalem
Throughout history God has watched over Jerusalem and spoken to her out of His heart of compassion. Although His words may have sounded harsh, they have always been for her good. In Ezekiel 22:2-5 (NKJV) the Lord spoke to Jerusalem about her sins:
“Now, son of man, will you judge, will you judge the bloody city? Yes, show her all her abominations! Then say, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “The city sheds blood in her own midst, that her time may come; and she makes idols within herself to defile herself. You have become guilty by the blood which you have shed, and have defiled yourself with the idols which you have made. You have caused your days to draw near, and have come to the end of your years; therefore I have made you a reproach to the nations, and a mockery to all countries. Those near and those far from you will mock you as infamous and full of tumult.”
The Israelites knew that the shedding of innocent blood resulted in defilement, but their social injustices brought about national and moral transgressions. God was displeased!
Ezekiel continued to prophesy to Jerusalem: “For her wickedness is evident to all-she boldly murders, leaving blood upon the rocks in open view for all to see; she does not even try to cover it. And I have left it there, uncovered, to shout to me against her and arouse my wrath and vengeance.” (Ez. 24:7-8 The Living Bible)
Jerusalem had become guilty because of the innocent blood that been shed. And that blood was once again shouting to God, crying out for vengeance.
One would think that over the course of time a city and a people would understand the consequences of their actions and turn from their iniquitous ways. But even in the days of Jesus, the people were again assigned the blood guiltiness from the foundations of the world. Jesus said to the Pharisees:
“Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.” (Mt. 23:34-36 NKJV)
This word was re-enforced when Jesus was crucified and the people cried out, “His blood be on us, and on our children.” What incredibly heavy cursing words! No city in the world has experienced so many religious struggles as Jerusalem. No city has been conquered so often, nor have the inhabitants of any other city been so often massacred or carried into captivity.
Battles have been waged there throughout history in the name of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam with slaughter of such brutal cruelty as no other city in the world has experienced. Since 1004 B.C. when King David conquered the Jebusites to make Jerusalem the capital of the united kingdom of Judah/Israel, Jerusalem has been invaded or in war at least 16 times. At least half of these have occurred since the death and resurrection of Jesus.
As we pray for the peace of Jerusalem, we need to be blood avengers against the forces that are holding that land captive. God has given us the right to execute judgment against these demonic forces and join Him in His redemptive plan. Satan has already been judged as Jesus told His disciples in John 16:11, “the ruler of this world had been judged.” Paul reiterated these words, “[God] disarmed the principalities and powers ranged against us and made a bold display and public example of them, in triumphing over them in Him and in it [the cross].” (Col. 2:15 Amp.)
On the Homefront
Although the stories of our own cities may not be as dramatic as that of Jerusalem, the principles of redemption that need to occur are the same. As we pray over our land, our cities, our states, and our nations, we must consider the spots on earth where blood cries out. Places such as battlegrounds are gaping wounds in the land that are crying out. The cry will be answered. Let this be the time that we arise, hear the cry, and respond. The blood of Jesus will redeem the shed blood, thereby setting the land free from blood guiltiness. This destroyed Satan’s legal right to demand more blood shed.
We have a choice, we can win this war in the spirit or we will have to fight in the natural. God has given us the tools and the authority to win in the spiritual realm. Let our faith rise as we proclaim the victory through the blood of Jesus!
Revelation 12:11 says, “And they overcame him [Satan] by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.” As we apply the blood of Jesus and execute His vengeance and judgment we will overcome. John wrote, “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment because as He is, so are we in this world.” (I Jn. 4:17)
Praying to Avenge the Blood of Jesus (Added by Martha today for article)
Again, it takes blood to redeem blood. The only blood that has the power to silence this cry is the blood of Jesus. There is a cry for shedding of blood by demonic spirits of war, abortion, murder, infirmity, death, etc. this cry must be silenced or it will demand blood by these methods i.e. war, abortion, murder, infirmity, death, etc.
When we find ourselves confronted by this, we can command the voice of the blood to shut up and be silent as we apply the blood of Jesus which was shed to redeem all things.
Some of the places that would require this action is abortion clinics, war memorials (yes memorials, monuments, etc. house demons), battlegrounds, entities that foment abortion or war for their own profit.
Here is a sample prayer: “I come as a representative of the Kingdom of God with all power and authority given me by Jesus, The Christ, The Son of the Living God to demand your plans and purposes be annulled that would require the shedding of innocent blood. I forbid your plans of evil to continue and say, let your limbs be paralyzed by the power vested in me as a child of the Living God. I execute judgment (Ps 149) on you men of war and those that cause terror in the land of the living according to Eze. 32 you will go down to the pit with the sword under your head and your iniquities on your bones. And say according to Eze 32:32 the terror of the Lord will be loosed on you, and you will be slain by the sword.”
Father, we accept Your clothing of vengeance and zeal as we execute Your judgment to establish Your Kingdom on this earth. We thank You for the blood You shed that gives us the victory to avenge your enemies in this world. With boldness, Your vengeance, and a zeal as we execute Your judgment to establish Your Kingdom on this earth. We thank You for the blood You shed that gives us the victory to avenge your enemies in this world. With boldness, Your vengeance, and a zeal for Your house, we press on, testifying of Your redemptive power! In Jesus’ Name.
