DEAR FRIENDS,
WE ARE 12 DAYS AWAY FROM HANUKKAH. Jolene and I made it from DC to Jerusalem late last night, and our first journey after breakfast was to the Western Wall. God’s shalom literally encompassed us both. Of all the times we have prayed here for our children, and now for yours—this time was the most powerful, and the most deeply felt.
Awesome Sign of God’s Timing
We knew something special was at hand when we unexpectedly connected with a longtime friend en route to the Western Wall. As we made our way, we stopped at the Golden Menorah in the Jewish quarter’s town square. To our astonishment, there stood our friend Eran Saloman. He just happened to be leading a tour to the very same place—at the very same moment. TICK TOCK TO THE HOLY CLOCK!
No, really.
Jolene and I became friends with Eran when he led our last few “Crown & Throne” tours in Israel with Ed Watts, James Nesbit, and Jamie Fitt. We all prayed a lot for Eran and his family through the pandemic, which of course shut down these tours and left him without an income. Lamplighter family, you even had the privilege of sowing into Eran and his family to bless them during this time.
And then in the first moments of our first trip back, there was our friend. So unexpected. So random. So God. So grateful!
Prayers for the Children
But back to the Western Wall. A 24-7 prayer vigil has saturated this prayer wall ever since the 1967 War, when after 2,000 years the sovereignty of Jerusalem became restored to Israel once again. Literally thousands of tiny scrolls have been wedged between the massive ashlar stones, written prayers from all over the world for God to bring His miracles to bear in our time— especially on behalf of children. At the wall I felt strongly moved to come into agreement for the prayers of parents especially to be answered.
Western Wall and the Hanukkah Turnaround
Historically, the sacred space known as the Western Wall became the epicenter of God’s “Hanukkah turnaround” in what we now know as Hanukkah. This is where Judah Maccabee and his spiritual revolutionaries broke through the strongest-known army in the world to retake their desolate sanctuary. A menorah was relit to reconsecrate the Temple to the Lord. Holy! The lamp only had enough oil for a single day, yet it somehow continued to burn for eight days (see Zechariah 4). And the miracle of Hanukkah was birthed.
As we wrote last week, it is now widely understood that Jesus Christ was most likely conceived over Hanukkah, a holiday that parallels the Christmas season. Messianic Jewish scholars especially believe He was born sometime during the fall feasts. Which means, according to the same timetable, that Christ was most likely CONCEIVED over what we call the Christmas season. Whether Jesus was conceived or birthed during this holy season, divine intentionality absolutely guided the experience. In other words, the season of Hanukkah was deliberately chosen by God to bring the Light of the World into this world!
Your Time for Visitation
You might remember the Christmas/Hanukkah season is also the time of the year where the Lord chose to encounter our son Jonathan, exactly one year to the day that we began to pray for him. Jonathan saw the Lord Jesus Christ calling out to him, compelling him to return home. For this reason Christmas marks the day that Christ was born in Jonathan, and Jonathan was born again.
As we shared last week, ’TIS THE SEASON FOR VISITATION! Jolene and I are asking God for a covenant promise to be seeded into your human spirit in this season. And for your children and families to see as well the very Hand of the Lord reaching out, compelling them to come home.
