Jolene and I are horrified and grieved by last night’s vicious attack at Charleston’s historic AME Church. Nine parishioners were murdered by a white shooter during a Bible study and prayer meeting at this historic black church.
We are praying through tears for the families who have suffered such inexplicable loss. We are praying for the family of this precious body of Christ. All we can say is we are with you and for you.
Over the past few years the Lord has really drawn us to pray for Charleston. We’ve been honored to minister to the saints of the land. In fact, it was in Charleston that the Lord quickened to us His verdict from Psalm 125:3 that “the scepter of the wicked must no longer remain on the land allotted to the righteous.”
For perspective’s sake, Charleston historically was the primary gate of slavery in America. Even while enduring this wicked scepter, the courage, tears and relentless dignity of the black church in Charleston helped to forge a new way forward that has literally redefined our nation.
You taught us all how to truly be free. And our hearts and prayers are with you, both through this tragedy and the challenges of the days and weeks to come.
My heart is broken. I too stand with this congregation.
