“It is one thing for a society to elect change; it is another for a court of law to impose change by adjudging those who oppose it hostes humani generis, enemies of the human race”–Justice Antonin Scalia.

In a historic ruling, the Supreme Court majority ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional, and that California may legally resume same sex marriages. President Obama celebrated the ruling, interrupting an MSNBC interview to congratulate the Prop 8 plaintiffs.

Prophetically, the ruling is no surprise. Jolene and I both felt for a while that the Supreme Court would rule in favor of gay marriage. God’s verdict remains clear–that marriage is between a bridegroom and a bride.

Perhaps equally historic as the ruling is the clear division between the liberal and conservative wings of the Supreme Court. This was expressed in the minority opinion, written by Judge Antonin Scalia, in response to Justice Kennedy’s majority opinion. In his thesis, Scalia warns of the judgmental attitude of the Supreme Court majority against others–primarily Christians–whose faith has motivated them to take a stand against same sex marriage.

I personally believe it might prove hauntingly prophetic.

“But to defend traditional marriage is not to condemn, demean, or humiliate those who would prefer other arrangements,” writes Scalia, “any more than to defend the Constitution of the United States is to condemn, demean, or humiliate other constitutions. To hurl such accusations so casually demeans this institution.

“In the majority’s judgment, any resistance to its holding is beyond the pale of reasoned disagreement. To question its high-handed invalidation of a presumptively valid statute is to act (the majority is sure) with the purpose to “disparage,” “injure,” “degrade,” “demean,” and “humiliate” our fellow human beings, our fellow citizens, who are homosexual.

“All that, simply for supporting an Act that did no more than codify an aspect of marriage that had been unquestioned in our society for most of its existence— indeed, had been unquestioned in virtually all societies for virtually all of human history. It is one thing for a society to elect change; it is another for a court of law to impose change by adjudging those who oppose it hostes humani generis, enemies of the human race.”

Justice Scalia’s thesis resonates with warnings from Pastor Jim Garlow, the San Diego minister who helped launch the Proposition 8 movement to define marriage as between one man and one woman. Garlow invested his life and posterity in this movement after receiving a clear warning from God’s Spirit. His warning is that the gay marriage issue could ultimately be used by the US government to persecute believers nationwide who adhere to biblical tenets of morality.

And when a Supreme Court Justice takes such an extraordinary measure, warning about the prejudicial attitudes even of fellow Supremes, it would be wise to take heed.

A final thought before our call tonight. I also wholeheartedly believe God has a redemptive purpose in all this. For years I have seen a massive, definitive move of Holy Spirit awakening coming to gays and lesbians across the nation. Keep in mind, these friends have abandoned every societal norm in pursuit of the passion in their hearts. What could happen if they fall in love with Jesus Christ? That’s one marriage that would turn the world upside down.
